Goethe Schreiben Tips: How to Score High on the Writing Section

Expert tips for the Goethe Writing section: email formats, word count strategies, rubric criteria, and common mistakes to avoid.

Understanding the Writing Task

The Goethe Schreiben (Writing) section requires you to write a response in a specific format. At A2-B1, you typically write a semi-formal email. At B2, you write a longer argumentative text or forum post. The key to scoring well is understanding exactly what the examiners look for.

Email and Letter Format

For email-based tasks, always include:

  • Anrede (Greeting): "Sehr geehrte Frau/Herr..." (formal) or "Liebe/Lieber..." (informal)
  • Einleitung (Introduction): Reference why you're writing
  • Hauptteil (Body): Address ALL required points from the prompt
  • Schluss (Closing): A polite closing line
  • Grußformel (Sign-off): "Mit freundlichen Grüßen" (formal) or "Viele Grüße" (informal)

Word Count Rules

Each level has target word counts that you should aim to meet:

  • A2: ~40-50 words
  • B1: ~80 words
  • B2: ~150-180 words
Writing significantly under the target loses points for task completion. Going 10-20% over is generally fine, but excessively long responses that include irrelevant content can also be penalized.

Rubric Criteria

Examiners score your writing on four dimensions:

  • Inhalt (Content): Did you address every point in the prompt? Missing even one required point costs significant marks.
  • Kommunikative Gestaltung (Communicative Design): Is your text well-organized with appropriate register (formal vs. informal)?
  • Wortschatz (Vocabulary): Do you use varied and level-appropriate vocabulary?
  • Strukturen (Grammar): Are your sentence structures accurate and varied?

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Missing prompt points: Read the task 2-3 times and check off each required element
  • Wrong register: Using "du" in a formal email or "Sie" in an informal one
  • No linking words: Texts without connectors (und, aber, deshalb, weil, obwohl) score lower on coherence
  • Repeated vocabulary: Using the same words repeatedly signals limited range
  • Ignoring word count: Too short = automatic point deduction

Practice Strategy

Write one response per day and compare it against model answers. Pay attention to structure and linking words more than perfect grammar — a well-organized text with minor errors scores better than a disorganized text with perfect grammar.
