Goethe Exam Passing Score: What You Need to Know
Understand the Goethe exam passing requirements: the 60% overall threshold, section minimums, and how scoring works at every level.
The 60% Rule
To pass any Goethe-Zertifikat exam, you need at least 60% of the total available points. This applies across all levels from A1 to C2. However, there's a critical detail many candidates overlook: you must also meet minimum scores in each module.
Section Minimums
The exam is divided into modules, and each module has its own passing threshold. You cannot compensate for a failed module with high scores in other sections. Here's how it breaks down:
- Reading (Lesen): Minimum 60% required
- Listening (Hören): Minimum 60% required
- Writing (Schreiben): Minimum 60% required
- Speaking (Sprechen): Minimum 60% required
How Points Are Calculated
Reading & Listening
These sections use objective scoring — each correct answer earns points. No partial credit for multiple-choice or matching questions. At B1, for example, Reading has 30 points available across 5 tasks.Writing
Writing is scored by trained examiners using a rubric that covers:- Task completion (did you address all required points?)
- Coherence and structure
- Vocabulary range and accuracy
- Grammar accuracy
Speaking
Speaking is assessed live by two examiners who rate:- Fluency and pronunciation
- Grammatical accuracy
- Vocabulary
- Interactive communication
Score Results
You receive results as "bestanden" (passed) or "nicht bestanden" (failed) for each module. Many testing centers also provide a breakdown showing your points per section, which helps identify areas for improvement if you need to retake.
Retaking Individual Modules
At B1 and above, you can retake individual failed modules without repeating the entire exam. This is valid within one year of your original exam date. At A1-A2, you typically retake the full exam.
